Hobart Removals
Tasmania ↔ mainland

The Bass Strait crossing planner

A move to or from Tasmania has a leg no mainland move does: the sea. Tell us the shape of your move and we’ll lay out how the crossing works, what to plan for, and when to book.

No prices here on purpose — a Strait crossing is quoted per job, not by the hour. This planner is the honest map of how the move works; the quote is your real number.

The crossing, in real numbers

277 km
Hobart to Devonport, the ferry & freight port — about a 3.5-hour drive north (G-NAF + OSRM, May 2026).
1 strait
Bass Strait, the stretch of sea every Tasmanian move crosses. Your goods travel by sea freight; we handle it door to door.
Geelong ↔ Devonport
The Spirit of Tasmania vehicle ferry route, if you’re driving your car across. Book passenger + vehicle spots early in summer.

Distances are real road routes via geomcp.au (Geoscape G-NAF May 2026 + OSRM). Ferry operator and route are current; sailings and fares change seasonally — check the operator for live times.

Crossing questions, answered

How does a move to or from Tasmania actually work?

Tasmania is separated from the mainland by Bass Strait, so your household goods cross by sea. We run it door to door: we pack and load in one state, your goods cross the Strait, and we deliver and unpack at the other end. You deal with one removalist, not the crossing logistics.

Where do things cross — and how far is that from Hobart?

Devonport, on Tasmania’s north coast, is the vehicle and freight port. It is about 278 km (a 3.5-hour drive) north of Hobart, so a Hobart move includes the run up or down the island as well as the Strait crossing. We factor that leg into the plan.

Can my car come too?

Yes. The Spirit of Tasmania vehicle ferry carries cars and small trailers across the Strait (Geelong to Devonport). If you are driving over, book your vehicle and passenger spots early — they sell out in peak season. If you would rather not drive it, ask us about moving the car as freight.

How far ahead should I book?

Summer (December to February) and school holidays are the busy season for the Strait, so give yourself four to six weeks where you can. Off-peak there is more give in the dates. The earlier we know your window, the more options we can hold for you.

Why is a Tasmania move quoted, not priced by the hour?

Local moves run by the hour, but a Strait crossing is a per-job move: the price turns on the volume of your household, the dates, the sea freight, and the access at both ends. So we give you a clear written quote for your specific move rather than a misleading hourly figure.
